Kangna in Sanjay Guptas Shootout At Wadala

It's finally in place. Kangna Ranaut and not Vidya Balan will be playing gangster Manya Surve's girl in Sanjay Gupta's Shootout At Wadala.
There was plenty of back-and-forth over the matter. Gupta initially wanted Vidya Balan for the part. But Vidya was unable to say either yes or no to the project. Finally after a few months of waiting Gupta and his co-producers Balaji took the decision last week to go with Kangna Ranaut for the role.
Explaining the reason for his decision Gupta says, "We've opted for Kangna after a great deal of deliberation. Kangna seems physically and emotionally right to play Manya Surve's girl."
"John Abraham and Kangna have never been paired together," adds Gupta hinting that the Vidya-John pair had already been done (in Nikhil Advani's Salaam-e-Ishq).
Interestingly, this won't be Kangna's first role as a gangster's girl. She started her career playing an on-screen version of Abu Salem's girlfriend in Anurag Basu's Gangster. More recenty, Kangna starred as a fictional Haji Mastan's girl in Milan Luthria's Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai.
The trick, we might add, is to make this part different from the earlier two gangster films.
Says Gupta, "The girl Kangna will play in Shootout At Wadala has two different looks and phases to carry off. First there will be the girl during college and then later after her involvement with Manya Surve, Kangna would have to portray a more mature woman. We've already discussed her looks for both the stages in the character's evolution."
Gupta says Kangna has been given two reference points. "I've basically told her that we want Smita Patil's look from Namak Halaal and Shakti. I want to capture Kangna in that same earthy raw light that she so effortlessly projected in her earlier films."
Kangna, apparently, has taken the role of Manya Surve's girlfriend to heart and has already started her own homework on the emotional and physical look for the part.
