Dawood Ibrahim may have long left Indian shores, but he is still the flavour of Bollywood. Apart from Once Upon A Time in Mumbai 2 and Shootout At Wadala, which feature the gangster, Vivek Oberoi has now approached Ekta Kapoor to make a biopic on the underworld don
After opting out of Sanjay Gupta's ambitious project, Shootout At Wadala, where he was playing the role of Dawood Ibrahim, Vivek Oberoi has reportedly approached Ekta Kapoor to produce a biopic, on the dreaded gangster with him in the title role. Incidentally, Kapoor is already producing Shootout At Wadala.
According to sources, Oberoi's interest in Ibrahim dates back to 2002, when he played the role of Chandu, the gangster's go-to-man in Ram Gopal Varma's Company. A source said, "After playing Dawood's associate, Vivek was keen to play Dawood. He got that chance with Shootout At Wadala. But here, Dawood's character was peripheral."
Oberoi is reportedly interested in basing this proposed film on the same book that Gupta is currently using for his film -- S Hussain Zaidi's Dongri To Dubai: A History Of The Mumbai Underworld.
When contacted, Gupta scoffed at the very notion of a Dawood biopic. He said, "Yes, I heard of Vivek's offer to Ekta. But I doubt she will do it. How many films with Dawood as a character can Ekta produce? She's got Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 and my film." According to the source, however, Kapoor has evinced interest and is considering the project.
Gupta further added, "I've taken all the vital episodes from Hussain's book and used it for my film. Vivek is welcome to take whatever is left." Despite repeated attempts, Oberoi was unavailable for comment.
