Big B is back as the lovable and very friendly Bhoothnath in Bhoothnath Returns. The movie starts off with a hilarious sequence of him in Bhoothworld, where a host of ghosts make fun of him for befriending a human kid instead of scaring him in the first installment. The reluctant ghost is then sent back to Earth to prove himself again. This time too Kailashnath bumbles around and ends up befriending yet another boy, Akhrot (Parth Bhalerao). The issue of corruption and elections has been woven into the plot as Bhoothnath takes on a corrupt politician, Bhau (Boman Irani), in the upcoming elections. While the movie is a strong commentary on today's political and voting scenario it loses its charm when it veers from being a supernatural comedy in the 1st hour to being one that is a preachy political drama in the 2nd. The prequel though a children's movie had an equally pertinent message of how kids should not desert their parents but it was fresh and entertaining, the sequel perhaps would have been the same if the storyline had been kept tighter and crisper. The movie displays Bhoothnath's ghostly antics but could have been slightly more light-hearted in the second half. Director Nitesh Tiwari turns in a good, endearing movie but one that goes on a tad too long at 2.5 hours! The immensely talented child actor, Parth Bhalerao, who plays Akhroth, is the real hero of the film-not only does he match Big B step for step, he also steals the show from him in a few places! Amitabh Bachchan looks fresh as ever as he performs his classic dance moves and runs around scaring people. As always he turns in an immaculate performance. Boman Irani is impressive. Sanjay Mishra and Usha Jadhav do an extremely fine job. The casting on the whole is spot on. This Bhoothnath unfortunately did not deliver all that it promised and deserves its 3 stars for the performance by the child actor and the message it conveys. -- Published on April 12, 2014
