There have been many Bollywood films in the past which have taken a look at India's Most Wanted criminal Dawood Ibrahim's life from different point of views. However, they were mostly centred on either his rise to the top of the Mumbai underworld or merely served as a backdrop for some other story to be told. Interestingly, director Nikhil Advani's latest venture D-Day is a departure from that zone as it focuses on the efforts of four people from diverse backgrounds to fulfill a nation's wish of bringing the dreaded don to justice. The highlights of D-Day include its brilliant casting which has the likes of Nassar, Irrfan Khan, Arjun Rampal, Huma Qureshi and Shruti Haasan bringing in both star power and authenticity to the project. While Rishi Kapoor takes the cake for his calculated yet softly menacing portrayal of Dawood Ibrahim, he is aided by the deft camerawork which creates a sense of fear and secrecy around him. Arjun Rampal's silence magnificently portrays his emotions. Huma Qureshi is intense and Irrfan Khan's vulnerability is palpable. Shruti Haasan's work is commendable. Nassar, Aakaash Daahiya and Sriswara are brilliant. Superbly crafted and narrated by Nikhil Advani, his team does not let him down either. Editors Aarif Sheikh and Unni Krishnan keep the narrative gripping and tight. Cinematography by Tushar Kanti Ray is phenomenal. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy ought to take a bow for the stupendous music. The close cut action shots by Tom Struthers are brilliantly executed, giving a very real feel without being over the top; in fact they are some of the coolest action sequences seen in a movie in a long time. On the whole D-Day keeps you riveted (teeth gritted, heart thumping, adrenaline pumping) and glued to your seat in anticipation. -- Published on July 20, 2013
