An engrossing tale, Vishal Bharadwaj's Dedh Ishqiya revolves around Khalu who after betraying and deserting Babban moves to a feudal town to participate in beauteous Begum Para's swayamvar. Through rounds of romantic and sometimes sardonic wit and eloquent shayari as well as a shooting contest, Khalujan tries to woo and impress Para. But what is a love story without a twist? Babban soon arrives to put a spanner in the works of Khalujan's romantic tryst. The two eventually patch up but unbeknownest to them, the scheming Para and her wily accomplice Muniya, have a plan up their sleeves. And of course to make matters worse there is the villain Jaan Mohammed. Based in Mahmudabad, a small town and in the Muslim social milieu, director Abhishek Chaubey masterfully puts the uncle-nephew pairing in a unique setting and a new situation. After weeks of utter tripe on the silver screen one has finally got to watch something that qualifies as good cinema. Dedh Ishqiya promises and delivers an element of entertainment never seen before with a cast that includes the original Ishqiya pair Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi, and now adds on the beautiful Madhuri Dixit and the lovely Huma Qureshi. Madhuri Dixit exudes poise and grace infusing her character with just the right amount of nakhras & adaas. Naseeruddin Shah is perfect while Arshad Warsi does not falter once as Babban. Huma Qureshi stands her ground adeptly and Vijay Raaz holds his own very impressively amongst the mostly experienced cast of Dedh Ishqiya. -- Published on January 11, 2014
