India's first zom-com, Go Goa Gone is out and we'll tell you if it has lived up to its unconventional billing. The story revolves around three friends Hardik, Luv and Bunny played by Kunal Khemu, Vir Das and Anand Tiwari respectively. Hardik and Luv are living the typical, mundane working life punctuated with their 'daaru and sutta sessions' until a twist of fate leaves them, how do we say it, screwed! That's where Bunny's 'official' Goa trip comes to the rescue and our friends head off to the 'party capital' of India. Once in Goa, it doesn't take Luv much effort to fall for Luna aka Puja Gupta acting on whose tip the trio head off to an island for a rave party. The night that starts out in a celebratory mood leads the friends into a morning which brings them face to face with a shocking realization - the guests at the party have mysteriously turned into lifeless, flesh eating creatures. The rest of the film is about how they try to evade the blood thirsty zombies with the help of a gun-toting, Russian speaking Boris aka Saif Ali Khan and it's for you to find out if they succeed in doing so. Coming to the actors, Kunal Khemu excels in his role and carries the film along even when the others let up. Vir Das and Anand Tiwari have their moments but do not leave much of an impression. Puja Gupta looks promising even though her character is inconsistently written, we wonder if it was a deliberate play on the name again. Saif Ali Khan gets the comic bits right but is a little inconsistent in his portrayal of Boris maybe because he has to keep switching between Russian, English and Hindi. As for the zombies, we know the filmmakers projected the film as a 'zom com' but it would have been great if they could have added a little more of the thrills. Apart from the laughs, there is a moment of brilliance in the film when a particular scene leaves you terrified. We wish the directors had explored that inherent fear in the subject a little further. -- Published on May 11, 2013
