Mardaani is not a movie..it is more than that...it is a message. And a potent one at that. The film tells the story of a female cop whose interest in the case of a kidnapped teenage girl leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking. We all know the statistics regarding human trafficking and the sex trade. This movie shows you what actually goes on in those brothels- that is, how these girls are made into prostitutes. Of course, great news for the men out there. The Indian women you pay to sleep with will do whatever you want them to, because most of the time they are either drugged or beaten up which is why they are always smiling. And if they don’t listen to you, well, then their wrists would be slit and they would die an agonizing death over the next few days or of-course they will be forcefully raped. The madam of the brothel makes the girls understand that 'pehli baar ke baad dard nahi hota'..and of course the girls do get their cupcake after their first night. Now, the performances. To praise Rani Mukherjees performance would be to undermine it, that is how well she plays a female senior inspector crime branch, Mumbai. And we don’t think there is any A grade actress presently who would have done justice to this role apart from her. Tahir Bhasin plays the villain in this movie and has an enviable opening shot. Jisshu Sengupta who plays Rani's husband, the street urchin Pyaro who gets kidnapped and the others fit well into their characters. -- Published on August 23, 2014
