Starring Abhay Deol and his real life girlfriend Preeti Desai as the lead pair, One By Two is based against the backdrop of life in the modern city of Mumbai. It revolves around 20 something, Amit Sharma, who is completely pakaoed in life, one who cannot think outside the box since his box is buried in a twenty feet deep hole. Samara lives in a world diametrically opposite from Amit's but is also at an all time low and is beset by her own problems. Their lives run parallel to each others without them ever really meeting. One By Two is basically the story of two individuals who may exist in different boxes and are yet plagued by the same frustrations of a, according to them, mundane, humdrum and unsuccessful life. Abhay Deol's, One By Two, a delightful rom-com entertainer is narrated in a very everyday life kind of way which makes it believable. It is a pleasnt and fun watch after all the nonsense we watch in the name of mainstream cinema. The narrative is simple, speaking directly to the youth without being preachy. The dialogues are engaging and the treatment of the plot makes it understanable to its target audience. The Shanghai actor who is known for his quirky and off-beat performances looks suitably 'pakaoed' by his humdrum life as he gives another spontaneous portrayal of his character. One particularly memorable scene in the film is when Abhay's character has a sudden epiphany about his life during his own roka ceremony and he whips out a guitar and starts singing the 'I'm Pakaoed' song in his boxer shorts. Preeti Desai does decent job of portraying a dancer who is frustrated with the shortcomings of her life. Rati Agnihotri, Lilette Dubey, Darshan Jariwala, Jayant Kripalani, Anish Trivedi & the rest of the cast all deliver performances that suitably complement the lead characters but Abhay Deol clearly steals the show in the acting department. Director & Writer Devika Bhagat does a fair job of balancing the two very different lead characters as she effectively narrates the tale in a light-hearted and relatable way. Shankar -Ehsaan- Loy's music is contemporary and certainly compliments the mood of the movie. -- Published on January 31, 2014
