Rangrezz marks the fifth time that the original Tamil film Naadodigal has been remade. Coming on the heels of Kai Po Che, Rangrezz is another friendship tale that looks to deconstruct the idealism and romanticism associated with young love. The film revolves around the lives of three friends Rishi, Winu and Pakya played by Jackky Bhagnani, Amitosh Nagpal and Vijay Verma respectively and how their lives undergo a drastic change when they decide to help Rishi's childhood friend elope with the love of his life. What happens after they've got the couple together is what forms the crux of the film's plot. Coming to the analysis, the foundation of the story might be a little clichéd but it leads to a fresh perspective on the idea of love. The strength of the film lies in its earnest approach toward its subject helped by Priyadarshan's able direction and Santosh Sivan's stunning cinematography. While the unwanted melodrama and over the top action can be a hindrance to the screenplay at times but the raw feel and gritty characterization of the film's middle class scenario helps it to stay on course. The background score complements the on screen action but music by Sajid-Wajid and Sundar C. Babu doesn't rise beyond the situation. Jackky Bhagnani is earnest as always and is ably supported by Amitosh Nagpal and Vijay Verma, the latter impressing with his smart one liners and tapori lingo while Priya Anand does well as the female lead. Rajpal Yadav is okay in his comic relief role and so is the rest of the cast. If only the film had stuck to a consistent tone in telling its story instead of being part preachy, part dramatic and part realistic, Rangrezz could have made more of an impact. -- Published on March 22, 2013
